History of Bupyeong Market

  • According to Incheon City's local heritage records, Incheon City led the founding of a public market in Bupyeong in 1948.
  • According to the same records, when the New Market opened in 1952, the existing Bupyeong Market came to be called the Old Market, and Jayu Market opened in the 1950s.
  • In 1962, Jayu Market changed its name to Bupyeong Market and served as the public market; in 1971, Bupyeong Market became a private market and changed its name to Bupyeong Jayu Market.
  • Bupyeong Culture Street opened in 1998.
  • Bupyeong Jonghap Market and Bupyeong Kkang Market were registered as markets in 2007 and Bupyeong Culture Street in 2013, and Bupyeong Jayu Market was demolished in 2018.
  • In 2025, Incheon City grouped Bupyeong Jonghap Market, Bupyeong Kkang Market and Bupyeong Culture Street and selected the 'Bupyeong Market Area' as Incheon Local Heritage.
  • As reasons for the selection, Incheon City cited the market's growth along with the area's history, such as a US military base stationed there after liberation and an export industrial complex built in the late 1960s. It also cited the layout of several markets bordering one another.
  • According to a Bupyeong-gu press release, in the Small and Medium Business Administration's 2017 traditional market support program, Bupyeong Culture Street was selected as a culture and tourism market and Bupyeong Kkang Market as an alley market.
  • From 2022 to 2026, Bupyeong-gu is running a Commercial District Renaissance project around Bupyeong Culture Street, Theme Street, Bupyeong Underground Shopping Center and Sijang Rotary Underground Shopping Center.
